Mykhailo Mudryk’s return to competitive football with Tottenham Hotspur has suffered another frustrating setback after the Ukrainian winger picked up an ankle injury in training.
Mudryk only recently made his return to action following his lengthy suspension and had joined Tottenham on a season-long loan from Chelsea on transfer deadline day. His arrival was seen as an opportunity for the 25-year-old to rebuild his career and regain the confidence that made him one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers during his time at Shakhtar Donetsk.
He made his Tottenham debut as a substitute during the goalless draw against Nottingham Forest last weekend. Although he only played around 15 minutes, manager Roberto De Zerbi was encouraged by what he saw from the winger.
However, Mudryk has now been forced back onto the sidelines after suffering an ankle problem during training. The injury is expected to keep him out until after the upcoming international break.
The timing is particularly disappointing for both player and club. Tottenham have made a difficult start to the Premier League campaign, collecting only one point from their opening three matches. De Zerbi had hoped that Mudryk’s pace, direct running and ability to attack defenders would provide another dimension to his struggling attack.
Mudryk’s career has already endured several difficult moments since his high-profile move to Chelsea in 2023. He struggled to establish himself consistently at Stamford Bridge before his career was interrupted by his doping suspension.
Tottenham were hoping his loan move would provide a fresh beginning. Instead, another injury has interrupted his momentum almost immediately.
De Zerbi has expressed his disappointment but remains hopeful that Mudryk can return quickly. For the player, the priority now is recovery and getting back onto the pitch.
