Manchester United are pushing hard to complete a deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, with negotiations reaching an advanced stage.
United have reportedly made a £65 million offer for the Cameroon international, made up of an initial payment and potential add-ons. The proposal is below Brighton’s previous valuation of the midfielder, but talks are continuing as United look to get the deal over the line.
Baleba has been a long-term target for United, and the club’s renewed pursuit comes as they continue rebuilding their midfield. The arrival of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos has already added more options in the centre of the pitch, but Baleba would provide something different.
The 22-year-old is particularly admired for his physical presence, energy and ability to operate as a defensive midfielder. His ball-winning ability could give United greater protection in front of the defence while allowing their more creative players to push further forward.
There is also a personal agreement reportedly in place, which could make negotiations with Brighton the main hurdle remaining. Baleba is currently recovering from an ankle problem, but the injury does not appear to have ended United’s interest.
For Brighton, losing Baleba would be another significant decision after the midfielder’s previous importance to the team. The club have historically been difficult negotiators, so United may still have to work to reach an agreement.
United supporters will now be watching closely as negotiations continue. If the Red Devils can complete the transfer, Baleba could become another major piece of the midfield rebuild under Michael Carrick.
