Manchester United ban 685 season-ticket holders over ticket touting

Manchester United have banned 685 season-ticket holders following a major investigation into ticket touting and the misuse of match tickets.

The club launched an investigation into 1,617 accounts after identifying unusual ticketing activity during the summer. United said the investigation focused on accounts suspected of deliberately abusing the club’s ticketing system for financial gain, particularly through organised ticket resale.

Of the accounts investigated, 685 ultimately received bans. Other supporters were given reduced sanctions or warnings after the club reviewed their individual circumstances.

Manchester United have defended the crackdown, arguing that ticket touting makes it harder for genuine supporters to attend matches. The club said the investigation uncovered organised networks involved in large-scale ticket trading and that stronger action was therefore necessary.

The decision has nevertheless generated significant anger among sections of the fanbase. Supporters’ groups have questioned whether the club provided enough transparency and evidence before imposing some of the bans.

The timing has also made the situation particularly sensitive, with Manchester United preparing to face Manchester City in a huge derby at Old Trafford.

United have said that tickets recovered through the investigation can be redistributed to supporters on the club’s waiting list. The club hopes the move will improve access for genuine fans and discourage further abuse of the ticketing system.

Ticket touting has become an increasingly serious problem across English football, with clubs attempting to prevent supporters from purchasing tickets simply to resell them at inflated prices.

For United, the latest crackdown represents one of their most significant attempts to address the problem. While the club insists the action is necessary to protect supporters, the controversy surrounding the bans means the issue is unlikely to disappear immeldiately.
