Chelsea continued their impressive beginning under Xabi Alonso with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Brighton in a seven-goal thriller at Stamford Bridge.
The match immediately developed into an attacking spectacle, with both teams showing an appetite for taking risks. Chelsea were particularly dangerous going forward and quickly established an advantage through Romeo Lavia.
Pedro Neto then added another goal as Chelsea began to take control. Joao Pedro also found the net, giving the home side what appeared to be a comfortable advantage.
Brighton, however, refused to collapse. They responded with a goal from Malick Yalcouye before an own goal brought them even closer. Pascal Gross then added another for Brighton, turning what had looked like a comfortable Chelsea victory into a tense finish.
With the scoreline level and momentum shifting, Chelsea needed someone to produce a decisive moment. Cole Palmer delivered exactly that, scoring late to restore Chelsea’s lead and secure all three points.
The result means Alonso’s competitive start as Chelsea manager remains perfect. Two matches have now produced two victories, giving supporters plenty of optimism about the direction of the team.
One of the most interesting aspects of Chelsea’s performance was their approach in possession. Rather than dominating the ball for long periods, the team looked increasingly comfortable attacking quickly and exploiting space when it appeared.
There were still defensive concerns, particularly after conceding three goals. New goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was making his debut and had to deal with a difficult evening, although there were also moments that demonstrated his quality.
Ultimately, though, Chelsea will be delighted with the result.
Seven-goal matches are rarely predictable, and Chelsea showed character by responding whenever Brighton threatened to take control.
For Alonso, the challenge now is maintaining this attacking confidence while improving the defensive side of the team. If Chelsea can find that balance, their strong start could develop into something much more significant.
