Atlético Madrid were unable to begin their campaign with a victory after being held to a 2-2 draw by Villarreal.
The result was disappointing for Atlético, especially given the expectations surrounding the club heading into the new season.
Villarreal showed from the beginning that they were not interested in simply sitting back. They attacked with confidence and repeatedly tested Atlético’s defence.
The game quickly developed into an entertaining contest, with both sides finding opportunities and refusing to give the other complete control.
For Atlético, the biggest storyline was undoubtedly Julian Alvarez.
The Argentine forward remains at the centre of growing transfer speculation, and the atmosphere around him became uncomfortable when he was booed by sections of the home support.
That reaction has inevitably raised more questions about whether his future remains in Madrid.
Arsenal are among the clubs reportedly interested in the striker, meaning every development surrounding Alvarez is now being watched closely.
On the pitch, however, Atlético still had a chance to win the match.
They continued pushing forward and created opportunities, but Villarreal refused to collapse.
The final 2-2 scoreline leaves Atlético with only one point and plenty to think about.
The club will need to improve defensively if they want to compete seriously at the top of La Liga. At the same time, they need clarity around Alvarez’s future because uncertainty surrounding one of their biggest attacking players can quickly become a distraction.
Villarreal will be much happier with the result.
Taking a point away from Atlético represents a strong start and gives them something positive to build on.
For Atlético, the season is still young, but the opening weekend has already provided plenty of questions.
