Barcelona have reportedly made Manchester City midfielder Rodri one of their biggest priorities as they look to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new season.
The Spanish giants are believed to be seriously interested in bringing the Spain international back to La Liga. Rodri has established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in world football, combining excellent passing with his ability to control the tempo of games.
For Barcelona, that quality is particularly attractive. The club has a talented group of young midfielders, but adding an experienced player of Rodri’s level could give the team greater balance and stability. His ability to sit in front of the defence while also progressing the ball would fit naturally into Barcelona’s possession-based style.
The biggest problem, however, is Manchester City. Rodri remains an important part of Pep Guardiola’s plans, and City would have little reason to let such an influential player leave easily. Any attempt from Barcelona would therefore require serious negotiations and a significant financial commitment.
There is also the question of whether Barcelona can afford a deal of this magnitude. The club has had to carefully manage its finances in recent years, meaning a transfer for Rodri would require considerable planning.
For Rodri himself, a return to Spain could be an interesting opportunity. He already knows the league extremely well and would be returning to a country where he has enjoyed some of the biggest moments of his career.
Nothing is settled yet, but Barcelona’s interest has added another major storyline to this summer’s transfer window. If they can pull off the move, signing Rodri would represent a huge statement of ambition.
