Emmanuel Petit paid a touching tribute to late Arsenal legend Pat Rice on Monday during a Sky Sports broadcast.
Well, Petit at least thought it was the late Pat Rice. But as the former France international quickly learned, it’s still thankfully just Pat Rice.
Speaking about some of his favorite memories during his time with the Gunners, Petit said: “He had some fights with Pat Rice as well, rest in peace Pat.”
The broadcast would return later, with host David Jones delivering a positive update on Rice’s living status.
“I’ve got some good news, Pat Rice sends his best,” Jones said. “He’s not actually no longer with us. He’s alive and kicking.
“A very flustered Petit laughed and said: “I’m sorry! Sorry Pat. I’m confused. I’m so sorry Pat. Pat, I made a mistake, sorry.”
Rice is one of the most revered figures in Arsenal history. The 75-year-old played more than 500 games with the Gunners from 1967 to 1980, winning a league title and two FA Cups.
The former Northern Ireland international rejoined Arsenal in 1984 as youth team coach, becoming a first-team assistant in 1996 when Arsene Wenger took over as head coach.
Petit played for Arsenal between 1997 and 2000, spending three seasons working with the still-very-alive Rice.
