EFL season explodes into life as Bolton, Middlesbrough, Millwall and West Brom all claim opening-day wins

The new EFL season wasted no time producing drama as several Championship clubs opened their campaigns with important victories.

Bolton Wanderers were among the biggest winners, defeating Preston North End 2-1 in a result that immediately gave their supporters something to celebrate. The victory was particularly significant because Bolton had returned to the Championship and started their campaign against a familiar rival.

Middlesbrough also began with three points after defeating Lincoln City 2-1. Lincoln, back in the second tier after 65 years, looked capable of causing an upset after taking the lead, but Middlesbrough fought back and eventually secured the win.

Millwall enjoyed a more comfortable afternoon, beating Bristol City 2-0. Josh Coburn was the star of the show, scoring both goals as Millwall took advantage of a Bristol City side that was reduced to ten men.

West Bromwich Albion also started strongly, coming from behind to beat Norwich City 2-1. After a goalless first half, the game came alive late on, with West Brom producing the goals when they mattered most.

Elsewhere, the Championship produced plenty of entertainment. Queens Park Rangers defeated Portsmouth 3-1, while Swansea City won 2-1 away at Stoke City.

Charlton Athletic also came from behind to beat Derby County 2-1, adding another comeback to an opening weekend that was full of them.

The results highlighted exactly why the Championship is often regarded as one of the most unpredictable leagues in football. Teams can dominate one moment and suddenly find themselves fighting for survival in the next.

With only one round played, nobody can seriously predict how the season will finish. But the opening weekend has already provided plenty of excitement.

For Bolton, Middlesbrough, Millwall and West Brom, however, the message is simple: they have started with three points, and that is exactly what every team wants.
