As the Springboks prepare for a thrilling encounter with the Barbarians at Twickenham, one name quietly gaining attention is that of Marnus van der Merwe, a dynamic and hard-hitting hooker determined to make the most of his big opportunity.
With the Boks rotating their squad and managing injuries to key players, van der Merwe has been handed a spot in the matchday lineup — a chance he’s intent on turning into something bigger.
“This isn’t just another game for me,” said the 26-year-old from the Free State. “Wearing the Bok jersey, no matter the occasion, is something you work your whole career for. I want to leave everything out there.”
Known for his explosive ball-carrying, low centre of gravity, and fearless defence, van der Merwe has made a name for himself at the Cheetahs and more recently with the Lions in the United Rugby Championship. Despite flying under the radar compared to more established names, his consistent performances have earned him the chance to showcase his abilities on the international stage.
The Barbarians, led by Ireland’s Peter O’Mahony and featuring attacking threats like Semi Radradra and Aaron Smith, will present a unique challenge. But van der Merwe is undaunted.
“They’re full of flair and they don’t play to structure like test teams do, which means you’ve got to be sharp in every moment,” he said. “For me, it’s about keeping the basics solid — hitting my lineouts, scrumming well, and bringing that physical edge.”
Springbok forwards coach Deon Davids praised van der Merwe’s hunger and energy at training this week. “Marnus brings a different kind of intensity,” Davids noted. “He’s aggressive in contact and technically strong. This is a massive opportunity for him to show he can contribute at the highest level.”
At 1.76m and 105kg, van der Merwe may not be the tallest hooker, but his power and mobility make him a threat around the park. With senior options like Malcolm Marx and Bongi Mbonambi either recovering or rested, this match could be a critical stepping stone for van der Merwe’s Springbok ambitions.
“This is a huge chance,” he said. “Not just to play, but to prove I belong here.”
