Real Madrid survived an extraordinary scare against Elche, eventually securing a dramatic 3–2 victory after throwing away a two-goal advantage.
José Mourinho’s side appeared to be cruising after establishing a 2–0 lead. Madrid had controlled large portions of the match and created several opportunities to put the game beyond Elche.
Instead, the hosts produced a remarkable second-half response.
Elche, who entered the match at the bottom of the La Liga table, refused to surrender and managed to bring the game level. Abiel Osorio and Fer Niño were responsible for the comeback, leaving Madrid facing the possibility of dropping points in a match they had appeared to have under control.
The equaliser completely changed the atmosphere. Madrid suddenly looked vulnerable, while Elche gained confidence and began believing that they could complete one of the biggest surprises of the season.
Madrid eventually found the response they desperately needed. Carlos Espí became the hero by scoring the late winner, rescuing three points for Mourinho’s team and preventing what would have been a damaging result.
The victory maintained Madrid’s strong start but also raised questions about their ability to control matches after taking the lead. Mourinho was visibly frustrated by the way his side allowed Elche back into the contest.
For Elche, the defeat was painful because of how close they came to completing the comeback. They demonstrated considerable resilience after going two goals down and pushed Madrid until the final stages.
