Manchester United’s new Premier League campaign has started with a result few supporters expected.
The Red Devils were beaten 2-0 by newly promoted Hull City, turning what should have been an exciting opening day into an immediate source of frustration.
Hull came into the match with nothing to lose, and they played with the confidence of a team determined to make a statement.
United struggled to respond.
Semi Ajayi opened the scoring for Hull, and Nobel Mendy added a second before half-time. Suddenly, United were facing a two-goal deficit and a long way back.
The most worrying aspect for United was not simply the scoreline. The team struggled to create enough clear opportunities despite having plenty of possession.
Hull defended with discipline and made it difficult for United’s attackers to find space. Whenever United attempted to build momentum, the hosts were able to disrupt their rhythm.
For manager Michael Carrick, it was a nightmare beginning to the campaign.
United supporters expected a stronger performance after a summer of recruitment and rebuilding. Instead, the same questions about creativity, balance and intensity immediately returned.
The defeat also puts additional pressure on the club in the transfer market.
The expected arrival of Carlos Baleba could help address some of the midfield problems, but United clearly need more than one player to completely transform the team.
Hull, meanwhile, deserve enormous credit.
Their return to the Premier League could not have started better. Beating Manchester United and keeping a clean sheet is the kind of result that can give a newly promoted club enormous confidence.
For United, though, there is little time to feel sorry for themselves.
The season has only just started, but the warning signs are already impossible to ignore.
