Bronny James had a breakout performance for the Los Angeles Lakers G-League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, on Thursday night, recording 30 points on 13-of-23 shooting, to go along with three rebounds and two assists. With that outing in the books, the Lakers have a decision to make regarding the talented rookie.
James has had a pretty interesting start to his professional career, as he’s bounced back and forth between the NBA and G-League to this point. He also missed a couple of weeks due to a bone bruise in his left heel, with the team opting to play it safe with James as he transitions to the NBA.
In his first game on the road with South Bay, James looked like a stud, and he turned a lot of heads with his big performance. Now, Los Angeles needs to decide what the next step is for James with the team reportedly still determining whether or not he will be with South Bay for next week’s G-League showcase.
“Sources: The Lakers are still deciding whether Bronny James will play for the South Bay Lakers at next week’s G League Showcase in Orlando,” NBA correspondent Marc Stein reported on X, formerly known as Twitter. “LA’s day-to-day health picture will be a prime factor. James just had 30 points for South Bay in Phoenix.”
There are a lot of factors that will go into whether or not James plays for South Bay during the showcase. His health is obviously crucial, and it sounds like that will be the deciding factor. LA also doesn’t want to have Bronny playing a ton of road games, as they may need him in the NBA depending on the health of their roster.
The more time James can get on the court, the better, but the Lakers are going to be cautious with their management of the 20-year old rookie. But if he’s healthy, he proved on Thursday night that it may be worth having him participate in the showcase.
For now, though, Los Angeles’ main objective will be getting themselves out of the recent rut they have found themselves in. Their next chance to do so will come on Friday night when they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves.
