Manchester United have been handed an early setback ahead of their first home Premier League match of the season, with new midfielder Carlos Baleba ruled out through injury.
The Cameroon international joined United from Brighton in a major summer transfer and was expected to play an important role in Michael Carrick’s midfield this season. However, the 22-year-old has suffered an ankle injury that is expected to keep him out for up to three weeks.
Baleba’s absence comes at an unfortunate time for United, who are already looking for a response after beginning their league campaign with a disappointing defeat to newly promoted Hull City. The midfielder was expected to provide additional physicality, energy and ball-winning ability in the centre of the pitch, making his absence particularly frustrating for the club.
Carrick has indicated that the injury is not considered a major long-term concern, meaning United remain hopeful that Baleba can return relatively soon. However, he will miss the opportunity to make his competitive debut for the club in the immediate fixture.
Manchester United will now have to consider their midfield options carefully as they prepare for Ipswich Town. The team desperately needs a positive result after the poor opening weekend, and playing at Old Trafford gives them an opportunity to put that disappointment behind them.
There was at least some positive news for Carrick, with Mason Mount returning to training after recovering from a minor injury. Amad Diallo, however, remains unavailable.
Baleba’s absence means United may have to rely on their other midfield additions to step up. With the transfer window still open, the club could also continue looking at further squad adjustments.
For United supporters, the priority is simple: get back to winning ways. Baleba may have to wait a little longer for his first appearance, but the club will hope his recovery progresses quickly.
