The Dallas Mavericks’ roster has taken a depth hit.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania tweeted that guard Dante Exum has “sustained a serious right wrist injury that could require surgery.”
Charania added that Exum and Dallas are “exploring treatment options for the injury.” Exum is in his eighth NBA season.
Exum averaged 7.8 points, 2.9 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 55 games for the Mavericks during the 2023-24 regular season. During Dallas run the NBA Finals, Exum averaged two points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 21 games.
While he doesn’t bring much in the way of prolific scoring, Exum does represent a decent bench option for a Mavericks team which, fairly frankly, relies more heavily on Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić. The addition of Klay Thompson will likely ease the load off its two star guards. Still, Exum can provide some rest minutes and now the team will look to replace that role should he miss significant time.
It is now rarer, but Dallas has $11.2 million in second apron space and $493,056 in first apron space. It’ll be hard to add a quality replacement with that limited space, but finding a fit may be needed.
Dallas will have to lean more on Spencer Dinwiddie, Quentin Grimes and Jaden Hardy to make up the minutes left absent by Exum.
